“We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because of the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively outnumbers the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here. We privileged few who won the lottery of birth, against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state, from which the vast majority has never stirred?” —

Richard Dawkins

I went to one of our local Gawad Kalinga sites in Naga City because I wanted to get involved with their cause. Of my prior knowledge to GK’s activities, I was expecting to help around with the actual (and the physical labor of) infrastructure of houses. But they told me I could volunteer for their Child and Youth Development program instead.   They briefly oriented me about their program, SAGIP: Sagipin ang Galing, Isip, Pangarap that focuses on values formation for the children in the GK communities. They provided me with a manual that comprehensively outlined the core values they aimed to instill; maka-Diyos, maka-bayan, maka-pamilya, maka-tao; and the respective activity to makes it relatable.

I start on the first Sunday of May and the first activity I will be facilitating is a puppet show about family values. Next will be a musical activity promoting OPM. And I haven’t really decided on the third one. I get three Sundays because the rest of May will be allotted for a week-long actual house-building project in another GK site in Camarines Sur.

If you’re in Naga City, you’re very welcome to volunteer! There’s an orientation this Saturday, April 25, 2012 9AM at the Gawad Kalinga office in Balatas. Or you can contact me to help around 09228876231 :D
